The Christian basis of Taunton Team Chaplaincy is at the heart of the work and it is because we see God as a loving Father who has reached out to us with kindness that we reach out to others. He reached out to us by sending the only one who could rescue us – His Son, Jesus Christ. For more about the life of Jesus Christ see What is a Christian?
Chaplains communicate the love of God in deed rather than word but if asked about Christianity we will be pleased to share what we know. It is accurate to say that becoming a Christian changes nothing and at the same time changes everything. We still are the same people, doing the same job, living in the same place and so on but the claim of Christianity is that we are given a new beginning. No Christian would say they have got there; we are all a “work in progress”.
One of the things most Christians do is go along to a local church. It has been said that going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a fast food outlet makes you a burger but those who have become Christians find the support and encouragement of being part of a group of Christians really helpful.
Taunton has a wide range of excellent churches and a considerable cooperation between them. This has influenced the number and scope of Christian initiatives that operate in the town. The Chaplaincy relies on the help of members from most of the churches in Taunton to provide chaplains, prayer support, finance, training and other resources.
Though the style of churches may vary the essence of the biblical message is common to all Christian churches. Some offer Alpha (or similar) courses which explain the basics of what Christianity is all about where you can ask any questions and find out more. For families “Messy Church” can include craft, activities, food and more, something which you and your family may enjoy even if you don’t normally go to church.
