CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT

Taunton United Reformed Church

Are you looking for a traditional celebration of Christmas, with a contemporary twist? This year at Taunton United Reformed Church, on Paul Street, we are going to have a larger-than-life contemporary crib scene, designed by local artist Norman Steel, lit up and framed by golden angels. On Sunday December 17th we will be singing carols in the street (from 2.30pm) and telling the Christmas story in our candle-lit carol service (at 4pm) with local guest choir The Hummingbirds. There will  be plenty of free food with a Christmas and international flavour. Why not come and try us this year? We would love to welcome you, as we celebrate the good news that God is with us. God comes down at Christmas for all the world, and in Taunton too…

A virgin in trainers? A tractor instead of a donkey?

The URC Church in Paul Street  is doing a modern take on the nativity. If you are passing  Paul Street you will see a larger-than-life outdoor crib scene, featuring Mary and Joseph in contemporary style in a tractor shed - and on Christmas Eve they will be joined by a Christ child in a baby-gro. The bright colours, vibrant halos and spot lights mean you can’t miss its.

It’s been designed by Norman Steel, a local Taunton artist,  a retired priest who enjoys presenting the Christian faith in ways that bring it to life. And it’s all been built by George Bros, a local Taunton firm.

On Sunday 10 December the congregation and their minister, Reverend Dr Susan Durber, ended the service outside despite the rain to dedicate the crib with a prayer. They hope the powerful art installation conveys in a fresh way the wonder of the Christmas story, that God was born among ordinary people just like us - to change our lives for good…

On Sunday 17th they will be singing carols outside, giving out free food, and then celebrating with Carols by Candlelight at 4pm with guest choir ‘The Hummingbirds’.
